There was a lame article today when I was looking at the Seattle Times online about the Crazy Horse Memorial. It was a fluff piece in the “Travel/Outdoors” section that had been picked up from elsewhere. Of course, it paid more attention to the impressive scale than to anything else. And there sure weren’t any Lakota viewpoints expressed.
I’ve got mixed feelings about the project. It seems like the foundation and it’s goals are sympathetic to funding and helping Native causes. But I guess the whole thing still seems like it is being done from a white perspective. I mean, how likely is it that any sort of tribal group is going to get together and try to blast a mountain apart in order to create a monumental stone sculpture? Seems doubtful.
